Dr. Bonnet established himself as an independent investigator in 2007 and is currently assistant professor at Université Laval with support including a Canadian research chair in Vascular Biology, a CFI grant, a Heart and Stroke New investigator Award as well as two operating grants (5 years) from CIHR and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
Dr Bonnet is showing a very strong start as an independent investigator. His Circulation paper (2009;120:1231-1241) represents an outstanding contribution by describing the effect of DHEA on vascular cell survival at the molecular level – via AKT and mitochondrial membrane polarization – in cultured human cells, in whole human arteries incubated ex vivo, as well as in an animal model of vascular repair after injury. The paper is an excellent illustration of the scope of Dr Bonnet’s methodological expertise and the depth of his conceptual approach, which brings to vascular biology concepts developed in the field of cancer (e.g., mitochondrial dysfunction). His scientific productivity accelerated with two papers currently accepted for full revision by Nature and by Science. The two papers have been the subjects of oral presentations that won awards at meetings of both the American Heart Association and the Canadian Hypertension Society.
Dr Bonnet has already received several awards in his short career. For instance, he recently won the first prize in the Cournard Comroe young investigator competition of the American Heart Association, as well as the Cardiovascular Health Network Pfizer Grant for the Future Award, a special award given to the PI of the grant with highest rating in this grant competition at the national level. Importantly, Dr Bonnet also has been an excellent mentor, as evidenced by the numerous international (AHA) local (SQHA) presentation awards received by graduate students under his supervision.
